Max Mosley, the 68 year old multimillionaire president of the International Automobile Association, is in court in London, England suing News of the World newsgroup for taping and publishing his sadomasochistic adventures with several women, in a fancy Chelsea apartment. The party cost about $5,000.00 and involved a bit of a Nazi motif as some of the women shouted commands in guttural German and wore army boots and Luftwaffe jackets. Mosley notes that he is proud of his sadomasochistic tendencies but is really pissed that exposure of same came to the attention of his wife who until then was oblivious to his sexual tastes.

At least this event should give Mrs. Mosley some great new ideas for what to get Max for Christmas.

The best part of the trial is the defence of the newspapers who claim that publication was "justified in the public interest".

I am sure the defendants will win this one. After all, ask any Londoner what is most important in his list of priorities, and he or she will say, "Never mind terrorism or high petrol prices, it’s most important for us to know that Max Mosley is kinky."

I don’t know about you but the next time I have a flat and I call the Canadian Automobile Association, I’ll tell the attendant that the tire just fixed itself and that he could leave, if I see him wearing a leather dress and a spiked helmet.

It's a consequence of the insane libel laws in the U.K. You can't tell the truth about anyone that can actually afford to hit back, or you'll wind up with a huge libel judgment against you. (Britain is considered by international standards to have only a semi-free press because of this; each and every story has to be approved by a lawyer.)

But stuff like this is fair game.
